Serves 2
Ingredients
14oz (397g) block of Extra Firm Tofu
1 Tbsp (15g) Cornstarch
1/2 tsp (2.5g) Poultry Seasoning
Salt & Pepper to taste
2 Green Onions sliced thin
Honey Garlic Sauce
6 large cloves Garlic minced
1/3 cup Mellody Vegan Honey + 2Tbsp (134g)
2 Tbsp (30ml) Water
1 Tbsp (15ml) Toasted Sesame Oil
1 Tbsp (15g) Miso Paste
1 1/2 (23ml) Tbsp Rice Vinegar
1 tsp (5ml) Soy Sauce
1 tsp (5g) fresh Ginger minced
Pinch of Red Chili Flakes (optional)
Salt & Pepper to taste
1 Tbsp (15g) Cornstarch mixed with 1 Tbsp (15ml) Water
Directions
1. Drain and press the tofu for 30 minutes to 1 hour. You can either use a tofu press or wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and set a heavy pan(s) on top.
2.Tear the tofu into 1” and 2” pieces and place into a bowl. The pieces should be ragged and uneven. Dust the tofu with the poultry seasoning, cornstarch, salt & pepper and toss until well coated.
3.Place the tofu onto a lined baking sheet and very lightly spray with oil. Bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown in color. The outside should be crispy while the inside is still tender. Set aside.
4.While the tofu is baking make the sauce. Start by adding the toasted sesame oil to a small pot on low heat. Add in the garlic and allow it to cook for 2 minutes. Give it a stir every 30-40 seconds to prevent burning. Add in the ginger and red chili flakes and cook another 1-2 minutes. Add in the mellody honey, rice vinegar, water and soy sauce and cook for 5 minutes.
5.Add in the miso paste and mix well, if necessary use a whisk to incorporate the miso into the sauce. Turn the heat up to medium low and once the sauce is just below a simmer add in the cornstarch slurry. Make sure to mix the sauce as you add in the slurry so no clumps form. Continue to cook the sauce, stirring occasionally until it thickens. This can take about 5 minutes.
6.Add the baked tofu to a bowl and pour over the thickened sauce, mix well. Add in the sliced green onions and mix again. Serve hot with rice and vegetables.
