Homemade Apple Sauce

There’s nothing like the taste of homemade apple sauce, specially when it’s so easy to make. It’s also a comfort knowing exactly what goes into your food. It’s made with minimal fresh ingredients and takes just over 30 minutes to make. It can be made however sweet or tart you like it. The amount of sweetness will depend on the variety of apples you use and the amount of sugar you add. I like my apple sauce to have a nice balance of both sweet and tart but you can adjust accordingly. It’s nice to have a fresh homemade version on hand to snack on or pair with yogurt, oatmeal or even ice cream! It will keep for up to two weeks when stored refrigerated in an airtight container. You can also freeze it for later use.

Makes 2.5 cups

Ingredients

2lbs (908g) about 6-7 Apples
1/2 cup (118ml) Water
1 1/2 Tbsp (23ml) Lemon Juice
1 Tbsp (15g) Cane or Coconut Sugar
1 Cinnamon Stick or (1/2 tsp Cinnamon added after the apples cook)
1/4 tsp Salt

Notes
Use any variety of apples you enjoy eating. I like to use apples that are both sweet and tart like; Pink Lady, Honey Crisp, Rome, Fuji or Braeburn. You can also use whichever you have on hand and mix them up.

Directions

1.Core and peel the apples. Cut them into smallish pieces. As you work, add them to the pot right away. Cover them with the water and lemon juice to help keep them from browning.

2.Add the cinnamon stick, sugar, salt and mix well. Turn the heat to medium high. Cover the pot and allow the apples to come to a boil.

3.Turn the heat down to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes. Stir once or twice to make sure the apples are not burning. When the apples are soft and can be pierced easily remove them from the heat.

4.Allow the apples to cool slightly before blending or mashing to desired consistency. I recommend using an immersion blender for a creamier texture.
